El Norte

Dir. Gregory Nava. 1983, 140 mins. With Ernesto Gómez Cruz, David Villalpando, Zaide Silvia Gutiérrez. Nava’s Oscar-nominated portrait of the arduous journey of a Guatemalan brother and sister as they flee persecution to emigrate to America was a groundbreaking art-house smash. Roger Ebert called this beautifully shot, wrenching human epic, which mixes dreamlike imagery with a gripping realism, “a Grapes of Wrath for our time.”
