Dir. David Lynch. 2001, 147 mins. 35mm. With Naomi Watts, Laura Harring, Justin Theroux. Newly arrived in Los Angeles, the talented actress Betty Elms (Watts) finds an intruder in her aunt’s apartment. Intrigued, Betty commits to helping the strange woman, an amnesiac brunette (Harring) who calls herself Rita, and an intimate relationship develops between the two. Mysteriously, in a parallel sphere, the failed actress Diane Selwyn (also Watts) is anguished by her unrequited love for Camilla (also Harring). As Stephen Holden wrote in The New York Times: “The movie is an ever-deepening reflection on the allure of Hollywood and on the multiple role-playing and self-invention that the moviegoing experience promises.”
