Misumi’s only contemporary film stars Ichikawa as a talented pupil of kendo caught up in a rivalry with a fellow student. Based on the novella by Yukio Mishima, The Sword allegorizes the temptations and consequences of a generation coming of age in a consumer society. Shot in high-contrast black and white in a distinctly New Wave style, itis one of Misumi’s cinematic gems.
