Screening
Taxi Driver

Dir. Martin Scorsese. 1976, 113 mins. New restoration on DCP. With Robert De Niro, Cybill Shepherd, Jodie Foster, Albert Brooks, Harvey Keitel. Scorsese’s dark, dyspeptic view of New York, made all the more menacing by a brassy Bernard Herrmann score, is also a great visual love letter to the Big Apple. Among the pimps, prostitutes, vermin, and trash, Scorsese highlights striking flashes of visual beauty and ultimately reveals an undying affection for a New York disappearing all around him. Paul Schrader’s script pays homage to The Searchers, a touchstone film for many American directors.
