Painted Fire (Chihwaseon)

Dir. Im Kwon-taek. 2002, 120 mins. With Choi Min-Shik, Ahn Sung-kee, Ho-jeong Yu. Winner of the Best Director Award at Cannes, this period portrait stars Choi as a nineteenth-century painter known as Ohwon. Born a commoner and discovered as a boy, Ohwon captivated and scandalized his country's ruling class and spent his long career in and out of favor, and in and out of trouble. Choi dazzles as the petulant, manipulative, and melancholy painter—whose behavior forecast the archetypal tortured artist of the 20th century.
