Czechoslovakia. Dir. Jiří Krejčík. 1949, 101 mins. With Milos Nedbal, Marie Vásová. This neglected psychological drama is a classic noir, about an insurance company clerk who seems to be a good husband and employee until the day he gets into a car crash and kills a young boy. He flees the scene to conceal an affair that he’s having; this study of moral failure and guilt was rare in the postwar period of Czech cinema, otherwise an era of upbeat Communist comedies.

Free with Museum admission.
