Screening
Uruphong Raksasad

One of Thai cinema’s most distinctive voices, Uruphong studied film at Thammasat University in Bangkok but, upon graduation, opted to leave behind the film industry, centered in the Thai capital, to work in his childhood village in the north of the country. His first feature, Stories From the North, is an anthology of his early shorts: vignettes of rural life that, as Thai critic Kong Rithdee put it, “speak not of casual bliss but of hard-fought serenity.” It is screening with The Rocket, about a village celebration that involves the ceremonial launching of homemade bamboo rockets.
