35mm print from New Yorker Films

Dir. Alain Resnais. 1983, 110 mins. With Vittorio Gassman, Geraldine Chaplin, Fanny Ardant. In one of his most audacious time-hopping experiments, Resnais links stories from three different time periods, all set in the same futuristic château. A rich Utopian builds a refuge, just before the outbreak of World War I; in 1982, the building is a school for intellectuals studying “The education of the imagination;” further in the future, two children turn it into a fantasy world of damsels and dragons.

Free with Museum admission.
